Much has been said over the past week about Matthew Newton. Alot of this talk has been focused on his problems, his issues with drug and alcohol and his mental health. Sure, this guy has problems. He has pleaded guilty to assulting one girlfriend and has now allegedly assulted another.
The focus here shouldn't be on Newton and his problems. Newton should go away and disappear. Go to rehab, therapy whatever. Just get out of the public eye.
We should be focusing on the victim in this case. We need to focus on the fact that there is no excuse for hitting a woman. Drugs, alcohol and mental health problems are not an excuse and Rachael Taylor (and Newton's former girlfriend Brooke Satchwell) should be applauded for not putting up with it.
On last night's 7pm Project, one of the stand in hosts Gorgi Coghlan finished up a segment about Newton's issues by saying 'We wish him a speedy recovery'.
Now sorry, but WTF? Why are we wishing Matthew Newton a speedy recovery? Shouldn't we be wishing Rachael Taylor a speedy recovery? Where was her mention of well wishes? I'm sure this was just a poor choice of words from Coghlan on live television but it doesn't hide the fact that so much attention has been put onto Newton's problems that people are sympathising with him.
The sympathy should be laying with the victim in this case. Matthew Newton is well aware of what he is capable of, he knows he has these problems. He has been through it before. I have no sympathy for someone who has stuffed up countless chances.
